Artists Statement: Rauschenberg said something to the effect that if you take a walk around the block and cannot find enough material to make great art, then you just aren’t looking hard enough. I am often startled as I look around the streets of Boston by the interaction between construction materials and markings, signage, graffiti,
(and its editing by business owners) and how they come together to make something new. It seems complete, as if painting is moving forward on its own. This clashing of independent wills, played out in color and mark, has as much influence on my work as do historic painting traditions.
In the studio I strive to be open to any impulse. I want my pictures to grow out of an obligation to freedom and acceptance. To make any move, edit any precious decision, or to make stylistic shifts mid-painting. The studio is an arena where conflicting characters can push against one another. Like the business owner, who can never quite match a wall color when he paints over graffiti, I see the eraser mark as playing the vital role of saboteur in the painting process. This interference that blocks out and breaks down the image introduces death and subsequently rebirth.
Many of my pictures include representations of things, persons, and settings that contribute to a story. I often indulge in a narrative impulse; however, I think a deeper meaning is communicated by the formal elements.
